Learned some Spanish

So I decided to try Preply for some Spanish tutoring. It was pretty easy to find a tutor, and my trial lesson was decent. I actually learned a few new phrases for my upcoming trip, which is cool. It felt pretty natural, like chatting with a friend who happens to know a lot about Spanish. No big fuss, just a good experience all around.

Good deal on first lesson

I was looking for some affordable English tutoring and found Preply. I got a really good discount on my first trial lesson, which made it feel like a smart purchase. The value for money was definitely there. I appreciate being able to try it out without spending too much.

Smooth process, decent tutor

Booking my Conversational English trial lesson was straightforward. The website was easy to navigate, and finding a tutor that fit my schedule was simple. The tutor I chose was knowledgeable and the lesson went well. The online classroom access worked without any glitches, which is always a plus. I haven't needed customer support yet, but the overall experience has been positive. I'm considering a subscription plan after this trial.

Good concept, minor hiccup

My experience with Preply for IELTS preparation was mostly positive. The tutor was competent and helped me with my weak areas. The lesson materials were helpful too. However, rescheduling a lesson was a little more cumbersome than I expected; it required a few extra clicks and confirmations. Overall, the convenience of online learning and the quality of instruction made it worthwhile, but that one minor interface issue could be smoother.

How does the whole subscription thing work after the trial? Do you just buy a bunch of lessons at once, or is it a monthly fee like Netflix?

K Kevin Nguyen 1 month ago
It's more like buying lesson packs. You pick how many hours a month you want and it charges you monthly, kinda like a subscription for hours. You can change it though.

You actually subscribe to a certain number of hours per week or month, and the more hours you commit to, the cheaper each lesson gets. It's not a flat monthly fee like a streaming service, it's tied to lesson hours.

Is Preply generally considered legit? Like, are the tutors actually qualified or just random people?

N Noor Torres 1 month ago
It's legit. Tutors go through an application process. Most seem pretty professional in my experience, though you still need to find one that matches your style.

Yeah, it's a real platform. Been using it for months. The tutors usually have some certifications or experience, it's not just anybody.

I'm in Chicago. If I sign up for lessons now, how quickly can I actually start? Is there a waiting period or can I jump in right away?

E Emma Beaumont 2 months ago
You can start pretty much instantly. Just pick a tutor and if their schedule works, you can book a trial lesson for the same day sometimes.

No waiting really. Once you pick a tutor and pay, you can book a slot in their calendar. Could be hours away if they're free, or a few days, depends on them.

Thinking of signing up during Black Friday this year. Do they usually have good sales then, or should I just use a referral code now?

J June G. 1 month ago
They often do have Black Friday deals, I remember seeing them last year. Could be for bulk lesson purchases or new users.

Black Friday is a good bet! They usually run some kind of promotion around Nov for new sign-ups or sometimes extra lesson credits if you already subscribe. Could be worth waiting if you're not in a hurry.

How does it compare to iTalki? I've used iTalki before, but wondering if Preply is better for conversational practice.

E Emma 2 months ago
I've used both. Preply feels a bit more structured sometimes with curriculum, but for just conversation, both are good. Prices can vary a lot between tutors on both platforms.

Preply vs iTalki is a common debate. I think Preply has a more polished classroom interface. For pure conversation, you can find tutors on both, it really just depends on the individual tutor you choose.
